HEC Chairman Leads Strategic Higher Education Engagements in Lahore and Karachi

During a series of high-level engagements in Lahore and Karachi, Chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan, Dr. Niaz Ahmad SI, has reiterated HEC's focus on strengthening the higher education sector in Pakistan through academic excellence, research, innovation, quality assurance and better university governance. With the visits, the leaders of the universities, faculty members, researchers and academic administrators shared their thoughts on the direction of higher education and the function of universities in the country's development. The various engagements centered on improving institutional quality, research and innovation, IP awareness and collaborations between academia, industry and government.

A major highlight of the Lahore visit was Dr. Niaz Ahmad's visit to Iqra University where he inaugurated the university's Intellectual Property (IP) Wall. The initiative seeks to raise awareness of intellectual property rights as well as encourage innovation and appreciation of the need to safeguard research outputs and creative ideas created within academic institutions. The HEC Chairman spoke to faculty members researchers, students, and highlighted the importance of innovation and intellectual property in today's modern university. He said that in order to develop an environment in which research is converted to practical solutions, startups, patents and technologies contributing to national competitiveness and economic growth, higher education institutions in Pakistan should promote such a culture.

Dr. Ahmad also spoke about HEC's continuous efforts to enhance research ecosystems in the universities through facilitating interdisciplinary research, international cooperation, and increased industry interactions. He urged institutions of learning to be more focused on research work that is directed towards national challenges which are of high international standard and impact. The HEC Chairman visited DHA Suffa University during his visit to Karachi, where he met with the leaders of the university and the academic community. The following topics were discussed: institutional quality enhancement, mechanisms for continuous improvement, academic governance and realization of best practices in higher education management.

The meeting highlighted the significance of introducing quality assurance mechanisms at the institutional level in Universities so as to build quality and excellence in teaching, learning, research and administration. Again, Dr. Ahmad underscored that an institutional culture of accountability, innovation and ongoing self-assessment is needed for sustainable institutional development. During the visits, the Chairman emphasized that universities need to be more than just educational institutions and become places of innovation, entrepreneurship and knowledge production. He urged the heads of universities to boost governance systems, faculty development, university partnerships and learning platforms for the new challenges in the world.

The interactions also facilitated a constructive discussion between HEC and the stakeholders of universities on policy reforms, digital transformation, research commercialization, and enhancing Pakistan's presence in international higher education rankings. These visits are part of the Commission's overall agenda to reach out directly to higher education institutions throughout the country and gain better understanding of their changing needs and promote reforms that enhance the quality of education and the effectiveness of institutions.

As HEC strives to strengthen the partnerships with universities in Lahore and Karachi, it is also working towards a resilient higher education system, which will encourage innovation, excellence in education and research, and positive impact for Pakistan's socioeconomic development. The series of engagements underscores HEC's ongoing efforts to establish the universities of Pakistan as a force of global competition, by producing skilled graduates, innovative solutions to the national and international challenges, and groundbreaking research.
