In a groundbreaking initiative to boost Pakistan's defense innovation landscape, the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) under the aegis of the National Science and Technology Park (NSTP) inked a Strategic Partnership Agreement with the AKD Group of Companies UK to launch Pakistan's first globally connected defense technology incubation and early-stage investment platform.
The agreement has been a big step towards connecting the academia and industry with international investment in Pakistan to promote the use of state-of-the-art defense technologies with commercial potential. Engineer Amer Sheikh, Director, National Science and Technology Park (NSTP) along with Allayar K. Durrani, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of AKD Group of Companies UK, signed the partnership agreement in the presence of Dr. Rizwan Riaz, Pro-Rector Research, Innovation and Commercialization (RIC) and Vice President, NUST.
The project aims to develop an ecosystem to foster new startups in defense and dual use technologies. The platform will aim to facilitate speedy commercialisation of innovative solutions coming out of Pakistan through the combination of NUST research and innovation capabilities and AKD Group UK's global network of investors. AKD Group UK will provide funding and investment support and will act as the Funding and Investment Lead, helping selected startups to engage with AKD Group UK's global portfolio of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), defense system integrators, technology partners and international investors. The partnership is expected to offer startups opportunities to access funding, mentorship, strategic partnerships and international markets.
The new platform will target high potential early-stage ventures which are able to advance advanced technology in dual-use areas such as defense, security, aerospace, artificial intelligence, robotics, cyber security, autonomous systems, and other areas. Selected startups will have incubation spaces, investment readiness programs, technical mentoring and opportunities to meet with international stakeholders. In a statement, officers underscored that the collaboration marks a new era in Pakistan's innovation ecosystem, establishing a network that connects the country with the world at large for defense technology entrepreneurs. They highlighted the importance of enhancing the cooperation among academia, industry, investors, and international technology partners to create a sustainable innovation ecosystem to face future security and technology challenges.
The partnership also demonstrates NUST's ongoing efforts to foster research commercialization and entrepreneurship by establishing NSTP as one of Pakistan's top innovation hubs. The initiative combines global investment expertise with the local excellence of research, aiming to create cutting-edge technologies that can become market products and make a contribution to national development and growth. The industry experts think the pact will spur more involvement from private industry in the promising defense technology market of Pakistan and provide opportunities for young innovators to build globally competitive solutions. It is hoped that the partnership will not only further facilitate the transfer of technology but will also facilitate foreign investments and help Pakistan emerge as an emerging force in the field of defense technology transfer and advanced technology entrepreneurship.
